What fractional CTO jobs involve
A fractional CTO provides technology leadership for a company that does not have, or does not yet need, a full-time one. The company may be a startup with a founder who is not technical, a business with an outside dev shop, or a team of engineers without a senior lead.
Your work is a mix of decisions and oversight. You choose or review the architecture and the stack, set engineering practices, plan the roadmap with the business side, and help hire and coach engineers. You also watch for risk in security, reliability, cost, and vendor lock-in.
You usually do not write most of the code. When you do, it is for a prototype, a hard problem, or a short period of rescue. The value is in making fewer, better technical decisions and keeping the team moving in one direction.
What fits in 5, 10 or 20 hours a week
At 5 hours a week, you act as a technical advisor. You review plans and pull requests at a high level, meet the lead engineer or founder, and flag risk. This works when a competent team exists.
At 10 hours, you own the technical direction. That means architecture decisions, a delivery process, hiring support, vendor choices, and regular reporting to the CEO or board. It is the common range for a standing role.
At 15 to 20 hours, you may run due diligence for a funding round or acquisition, lead a migration, rebuild a failing system, or take the lead on a security review. Such work is often temporary. For the company view, see fractional CTO for seed stage startups. Always write the cap and the scope together.
Rates and an income example
Senior US fractional CTOs typically charge $180 to $300 an hour. Rates are higher for experience in scaling teams, regulated industries, security, or data and machine learning systems. These are market ranges. They are not offers or a promise of income.
For monthly income from one client, multiply hourly rate by weekly hours by 4.33. At $220 an hour for 10 hours a week, that is $9,526 a month. At $190 an hour for 6 hours, it is about $4,936. You keep 100 percent of the agreed rate, and the company pays the platform fee on top.
Senior engineers who do not lead teams can also find hourly work. Senior React and Python engineers typically work at $110 to $185 an hour. See part time remote jobs if you prefer hands-on delivery to leadership. Our guide on setting your rate for side work helps you decide.
Fractional CTO work compared with other paths
Technology leaders choose between several routes. This table compares four.
| Path | Hours control | Rate | Who finds clients | Contracts | Payment timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fractional CTO on Side.work | You set availability, contract sets weekly cap | You set it, you keep 100 percent | Matching and intros, plus applications | Platform contract with NDA and IP terms | Weekly timesheet, one invoice paid by the company |
| A second full-time engineering job | Fixed, long hours | Salary and equity | You or a recruiter | Employment agreement, often with invention assignment | Payroll |
| Freelance bidding sites | Project based | Pressure from lower bids | You, through proposals | Varies | Per site rules |
| Consulting through an agency | Agency decides | Agency keeps a margin | The agency | Subcontract | After the agency is paid |
If you want to guide the technical direction for several companies, fractional work gives the most control. If you want to build one product with a large team, a full-time role is better.
Showing technical judgment on your profile
Companies hiring a fractional CTO usually cannot judge the code. They rely on your story and on proof that you make good calls. Say which stage and kind of product you know. "Fractional CTO for seed to Series A SaaS, architecture, hiring, and security basics" is a clear match.
Describe decisions, not just technologies. "Moved a monolith to a simpler deployment and cut release time" tells more than a list of frameworks. Keep claims honest and general. Do not invent metrics.
Side.work checks your work email domain, LinkedIn profile, live portfolio links, and payout identity. If you have public code, talks, or writing, link it. In the first call, expect questions about how you explain tradeoffs to a non-technical founder, and what you would review in the first two weeks. Companies search for a fractional CTO through matching, and the fractional jobs page covers the wider picture.
The first 30 days with a new client
Start by listening. Meet the founder and the engineers, read the main parts of the code, map the systems and vendors, and note where the team feels slow or afraid to change things. Ask what has broken in the last six months and what the next big deadline is.
Then give a short written assessment. It should name the top risks, the quick wins, and a plan for the next 60 days, in plain language that a non-technical founder can follow. Fix what is cheap and urgent first. Leave big rewrites until you have evidence that they are worth the cost.
This early report also sets the tone for your weekly hours. It shows the client where their money is going and gives them something to approve.
Security, access and responsibility
Technology leaders carry risk. You may get access to code, cloud accounts, and customer data. Ask for the least access you need, use your own secured devices, and keep client data out of personal tools. Agree who holds the admin accounts, and record changes you make.
Be clear about what you are responsible for. A fractional CTO advises and directs, but the company still owns its systems and its legal duties. Put expectations about on-call, incident response, and weekends in writing, because they can quickly exceed your weekly cap.
When a problem is outside your skills, say so and help the company find the right specialist. That honesty builds more trust than pretending.
Employment terms, IP and conflicts
Engineers and technologists face the strictest employment terms. Many agreements include invention assignment clauses that claim ideas or code related to the employer business, even outside work hours. Read yours carefully before taking any client. Check also for moonlighting limits and conflict of interest rules. Side.work asks you to confirm that your side work does not conflict with your employment terms. This is general information, not legal advice. Ask an employment lawyer if you are unsure.
Each platform contract includes a default NDA and IP assignment, so ownership of the work you deliver is clear. Do not bring code, tools, or data from other clients or employers. Read contracts for fractional work for what to check. You are an independent contractor and responsible for your own taxes and insurance.
Timesheets, payouts and getting started
You log hours weekly and the company approves the timesheet. It then pays one invoice for approved hours plus the platform fee. Payouts go to your connected bank account once our payment processor has checked your identity. The notice period in the contract sets how the engagement can end.
The Specialist plan is $9 a month billed yearly ($108 a year) or $19 a month. It includes a verified profile in matching, 30 applications a month, alerts, contracts, timesheets, and payouts. There is no free plan, and payments are final. You can cancel anytime. We cannot promise a number of roles, income, or response times.
