What fractional HR jobs involve
A fractional HR lead handles people operations for a company that has grown past informal habits but cannot justify a full-time head of HR. At 20 to 150 employees, a business often has handbook gaps, uneven pay, messy hiring, and managers who have never been trained.
You bring order. You write or fix policies, design the hiring process, set up onboarding, build job levels and pay bands, and coach managers through hard conversations such as performance issues. You work with the founder or COO and often with an outside payroll provider and a benefits broker.
The work is practical and often sensitive. It involves personal information, disputes, and legal risk, so judgment and discretion matter as much as technical knowledge.
What fits in 5, 10 or 20 hours a week
At 5 hours a week, you provide HR advice on demand. You answer manager questions, review documents, and handle a small number of cases. This suits a company under 30 people.
At 8 to 10 hours, you own the people function. That includes the handbook, hiring process, onboarding, review cycles, pay structure, and regular reporting to leadership. This is the usual range for a standing role.
At 15 to 20 hours, you may run a hiring surge, a reorganization, a compensation redesign, or a rollout of a performance system. These projects often have an end. Related functions include fractional recruiters, who may work with you, so be clear who owns hiring tasks. Always set the weekly cap and the scope together.
Many companies start with a short audit. You review the handbook, offer letters, pay, and hiring steps, then give a ranked list of fixes with the hours each needs. It is a clean way to start, and it helps both sides decide on a standing cap.
Rates and an income example
Senior US fractional HR leads typically charge $110 to $190 an hour. Fractional recruiters work in a band of about $85 to $150 an hour. Rates are higher for experience with compensation design, employee relations, or hiring in a specialized field. These are market ranges, not offers.
Monthly income from one client is hourly rate times weekly hours times 4.33. At $150 an hour for 8 hours a week, you earn about $5,196 a month. At $130 an hour for 5 hours, you earn about $2,815. You keep 100 percent of your agreed rate, and the company pays the platform fee on top.
We do not promise any number of roles or level of income. Read how to set your rate for side work to choose a figure you can defend.
Fractional HR work compared with other routes
People leaders have several routes to extra work. The table compares four.
| Route | Hours control | Rate | Who finds clients | Contracts | Payment timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fractional HR on Side.work | You set availability, contract sets weekly cap | You set it, you keep 100 percent | Matching and intros, plus applications | Platform contract with NDA and IP terms | Weekly timesheet, one invoice paid by the company |
| A second full-time HR job | Fixed, long hours | Salary | You or a recruiter | Employment agreement | Payroll |
| Freelance bidding sites | Project based | Often lower with competing bids | You, through proposals | Varies | Per site rules |
| Consulting through a staffing firm or agency | The firm decides | The firm keeps a margin | The firm | Subcontract | After the firm is paid |
The first row is for people leaders who want to serve more than one company and keep control of rate and hours.
How to present HR experience clearly
HR is broad, so narrow your profile. Pick the stage and the problem. "Fractional HR for 30 to 120 person tech companies, handbook, hiring process, pay bands" is easier to match than "HR professional".
Be specific about what you have built, in general terms. Examples include a leveling framework, an onboarding program, a performance review cycle, or a hiring scorecard. Link live work samples that are safe to share, such as templates you made for yourself or articles you wrote. Do not share anything confidential from past employers.
Side.work checks your work email domain, LinkedIn profile, live portfolio links, and payout identity. Companies will ask about your approach to hard topics, such as terminations and complaints, and about which state laws you know. Say where your knowledge ends, and refer companies to an employment lawyer for legal advice. See fractional jobs for related roles.
The first 60 days in a new people role
In the first weeks, listen before you write. Talk to the founder and managers, read the current handbook and offer letters, and look at how people are hired, paid, and reviewed. Note where rules exist on paper but nobody follows them, and where nothing exists at all.
Then pick the few fixes that matter most. A clear hiring process, an onboarding checklist, and a simple pay framework often do more than a long policy document. Keep language plain so managers will actually use it.
By day 60, the company should have a short list of what is done, what is in progress, and what is next, along with the hours each item needs. This makes your weekly cap easy to defend and gives the client something concrete to review. Our guide to scoping a part time senior role shows how to write such a plan.
Handling sensitive information and legal limits
HR work involves private data about people. Ask what systems you will use, who can see what, and where records live. Use secured devices, share the minimum, and never store employee data in personal tools.
Know your limits. A fractional HR lead is not the company lawyer. Laws on leave, pay, classification, and termination differ by state. For legal questions, the company should talk to an employment lawyer, or a fractional general counsel. What you provide is process and judgment, not legal advice.
Write down what you do and when. Notes help in case of a later dispute, and they also support your timesheet.
Employment terms, conflicts and contracts
If you hold a full-time HR job, check your agreement for moonlighting limits, conflict of interest rules, and confidentiality terms. Do not use your employer templates or data for a client. Side.work asks you to confirm that your side work does not conflict with your employment terms. This is general information, not legal advice. Ask an employment lawyer if a clause is unclear.
Each platform contract has a weekly hours cap, a notice period, and a default NDA and IP assignment. That covers who owns the policies and templates you write for a client. Read contracts for fractional work for what to look for. You are an independent contractor, so you handle taxes and insurance. Be careful with advice about worker classification, since your own status as a contractor follows its own rules.
Timesheets, payouts and getting started
You log hours weekly and the company approves the timesheet. It then pays one invoice for approved hours plus the platform fee. Payouts go to your connected bank account once our payment processor has checked your identity.
The Specialist plan is $9 a month billed yearly ($108 a year) or $19 a month. It includes a verified profile in matching, 30 applications a month, alerts, contracts, timesheets, and payouts. There is no free plan, and payments are final. You can cancel anytime. We do not guarantee roles, income, or response times. Visit the work hub, see fractional CTO jobs, or check pricing.
